Dashboard Week Day 1: Bike Point APIs

For Dashboard Week day 1, DS54 will be exploring London’s cycling infrastructure using live data from Transport for London’s Bike Point API.

Across the day, DS54 will use Alteryx and Tableau to transform real-time Bike Point data into an interactive dashboard that helps users plan cycling journeys across London - from finding an available bike at the start of their trip to identifying a free dock at their destination.

The Brief

The group has access to live data from Transport for London’s Bike Point API, which provides real-time information on London’s Santander Cycle docking stations. This dataset includes Bike Point locations, capacity, available bikes, and empty docks.

The data is sourced directly from the TFL Bike Point API.

Using the data provided, the group will need to:

  • Connect to the API and retrieve the Bike Point data using Alteryx
  • Clean, structure, and prepare the data for analysis and visualisation
  • Bring the cleaned data into Tableau to create an interactive dashboard

The aim is to build a dashboard that supports journey planning across London. The dashboard should allow users to input a start and end destination, and answer the following questions (plus any additional information as seen relevant by our consultants!):

  • Which Bike Points are near a user’s starting location?
  • How many bikes are available at each nearby starting Bike Point?
  • Which Bike Points are near a user’s destination?
  • How many empty docks are available at each nearby destination Bike Point?

DS54 will present their dashboards at 3.30pm, and finish the day by reflecting on their approach and findings via a blog - Good luck! 🚲
