This month, Back 2 Viz Basics teamed up with the Data Pride Tableau User Group for a new challenge: to build a Gantt chart visualizing when and where various 2025 Pride events are happening across the United States.
As soon as I saw the prompt, I was intrigued. I had previously built a Gantt chart for a dashboard exploring Lambda Literary Award data, where I first learned how to create Gantt bars with rounded edges. That stylistic choice felt like a perfect match for this challenge—adding a bit of softness and polish to timelines that celebrate vibrant, joyful events.
Reformatting the Data
To get the data Tableau-ready, it needed reshaping so that each row represented a single day of a single event. For example, Dallas Southern Pride lasts four days —so the dataset needed 4 rows for that event, one for each day, each labeled “Dallas Southern Pride” with the corresponding daily date.
1. Turn on Source Row Numbers
On the input step in your prep flow make sure to include source row numbers. This will allow you to generate a unique event ID by preserving the original source row numbers.
2. Generate Rows for Each Event on the Daily Level
Make sure to select ‘Copy from previous rows’ under ‘What values should your new roles have?’ this will ensure that your other columns get filled down.

Building the Viz in Tableau
Once the data was in the right format, building the Gantt chart in Tableau was fairly straightforward. You can see a screenshot of the final setup below.
