DSNY9’s Dashboard Week was only three days, due to scheduling conflicts.
Day 1, we worked through rebuilding a Tableau dashboard in Tableau Next.
Day 2, we rebuilt a Makeover Monday project of our choosing using Power BI.
We had confirmation that our final day would be returning to Tableau, but we got started with a surprise- before we could build in Tableau, we had to webscrape Ben and Jerry’s website using Alteryx.
This wasn’t quite what we expected, but of all the websites to scrape, I was pretty happy to have this one! I worked up a draft of visualizing ice cream cones a few weeks ago after being inspired in class, so I knew pretty quickly what I wanted to do. I found the Flavor Graveyard and got to work. In DSNY time, Alteryx felt like an eternity ago, so we huddled up in a meeting room and scraped our brains for RegEx knowledge.
Thankfully, I only needed to pull three fields- name, description, and years active so it wasn’t too long of a process and I was able to jump into Tableau relatively quickly.
The ice cream scoops are colored based on their base ice cream flavor, and the length of the cones reflects how long the flavor was on the market.
I also knew I wanted the background to feel like Ben and Jerry’s branding, so I resorted to Ol’ Faithful- Paint- to create it.
While I can think of plenty of changes to improve on it (a custom shape for the ice cream scoop being first on the list!), I’m pretty happy with the result after only a few hours of work. That’s a wrap on Dashboard Week and on training!
