Last Day!
It's crazy to be sitting here writing this blog on DSNY9's last day of training. I feel like the last 4 month were both so long yet went so fast. Last night I spent some time thinking about my application and interview process and the person I was then would be so proud to be where I am today. If you've read my application to The Data School blog you would know that I had my eye on this company forever and to be moving forward into client work
Today our task is to find data on the Ben & Jerrys website and create a viz on it. Right off the bat I knew what I wanted to do. An old image comes to mind of "The Flavor Graveyard".
This was an old thing that Ben & Jerrys had on their website with all the flavors that were discontinued. So finding the Ben and Jerrys Graveyards website I moved over to Alteryx to web scrape. This was one of the more difficult parts because we haven't done it in a while and it took a second to get back into it. By about 11am I had all the data I needed and moved to Tableau. Here is a snippet of the Alteryx workflow.
From there I wanted to create an image of a graveyard and essentially float the data over top. After working in Tableau for about 2 hours I quickly realized that all of the flavors would not work because of the sheer minimal space on some of the farther graves.
Keeping the same style and vibe I had the image recreated by AI and made it smaller to only the top 8 by the longest life flavors that are now dead. I also added a little skull that you can hover over to see more details like the description or poem to the flavor.
And this is what we ended with today. To think this is the end of training is crazy... And although this wasn't a business dashboard or anything practical, I felt it was the first time we got to just let our creativity fly and I'm happy with it.
