Dashboard Week Day 1 and 2

Today, we are in the world of Power BI and took part in the Data Viz World Champs Data Viz Championship.
For this two-day project, we had to explore what variables impacted the revenue of PitchPro ( a 'fictional' global e-commerce retail business ) across the previous 5 years and where the business should invest next to maintain the growth they had experienced

The Process

After reading through the brief and confirming my understanding and deliverables for the project. I started by creating a user story, answering some scoping questions and started researching for inspiration for the concept sketch.

For this research, not only did I look online, but I also entered my user stories and the answers to my scoping questions into ChatGPT, making sure to exclude identifiers of Pitchpro. Prompting ChatGPT to then provide me a sketch, I processed within creating a sketch.

I initially split it into Overview and drivers; however, I pivoted a couple of things, and it turns out in the final piece, some of the charts used for the Drivers dashboards ended up going on the overview page.

I then moved on to building within Power BI. Starting out with importing the schema and then building out any charts. To continue to spark ideas and analysis as i built. This brought me to the end of Day 1.

Once Day 2 commenced, there was a major change that I ended up prioritising. And that was to Change my KPIs from Yearly to Daily KPIs. As one of the requirements was that this dashboard would be looked at daily.

With these changes made, I then moved to looking at Design, focusing on creating a logo inspired by the hexagon found on a football. Since this dashboard was meant for the eyes of leadership. I decided to keep to a minimal theme. This then allowed me some freedom to play around with the colour palette. I ended up choosing a cool-toned palette with different shades of green to reflect the pitch.

Lessons Learned from the Project

  • Finalise granularity of dates early on
  • Dive into data exploration sooner
  • Account for Metic Validation and KPI checking when planning.
