My First Client Project Experience

This week marked our first client project which was an internal client where a coach, Robbin, acted as the CEO of PrepAir, a fictional airline company. The project came with four key objectives which were understanding customer satisfaction, HR performance, sales pricing, and operational decisions. After the kickoff call with the client, we created four user stories which were based on the objectives and the information gathered from that initial conversation. These stories helped guide our approach in deciding which analysis and dashboards would be most useful for the client.

I was initially partnered with Francesca and we were responsible for planning the HR and Customer Satisfaction dashboards. This involved identifying the most appropriate charts, creating initial sketches, and preparing them for client review. The feedback we received was helpful which was mainly focused on adding a KPI on total salary costs as a percentage of overall costs and ensuring that each chart included a time element so that trends across the years were visible.

My task after this planning phase was to begin building the HR dashboard. However, as the week progressed, our team realised that we did not yet have an overview dashboard which was the most important dashboard for tying everything together. This meant that the HR dashboard became a lower priority and so my main task was building the overview dashboard instead.

This required me to look at different tables in the dataset which was a change from what I had been working with earlier. Using the sketches created by Tyler, I built the overview dashboard so that it aligned with the user stories and answered the CEO’s high level questions about the organisation’s performance.

The end of the week was spent finishing the dashboards and preparing for our presentation. The presentation itself went well which was reassuring for our first client experience. At the same time, we received a significant amount of feedback on areas where we could improve. It can feel overwhelming to receive so much feedback during a first client project, but it was genuinely valuable. It gave us clear guidance on what to improve and will be especially helpful as we move into future projects with real clients.
